346 Max SeamIn this quick diagram, Davis is the "X" (split wide left), LT is the HB (on the left side behind the QB), and Gates is the TE on the right. The defense is in a fairly basic Cover 3, the left corner is getting depth over the top of Davis's 3 route and the Left OLB is responsible for the flat zone so he is dropping fairly aggressively to get under the 12 yard out. We're going to run the Seam with LT behind him. If the ILB (circled in blue) gets wide to challenge the seam, then we come back to Gates behind him. DANGER: we need to make sure if we come back to Gates that both Gates and Rivers are aware of the other ILB and throw the ball away from him, basically that means that if the Left ILB vacates to try and challenge LT's seam route, then Gates needs to keep getting width and a little depth and Rivers needs to lead him away from the other ILB with the throw. Finally we'll run a 6-route (10 yard post) over the top just to hold the safety in deep middle and create some space. Lorenzo Neal can run a route, but we've already got a 3-route progression here so best to just keep it simple and let him stay in and pass block (Max). What we're really doing here is playing a 3-on-2 (Davis, LT, Gates) against OLB and ILB horizontal stretch route. It's important that Davis sell the go route to get the left corner to turn and run and respect the deep pattern. If the left corner doesn't respect the pattern he'll sit on the out, leaving the OLB free to stay back in and maybe get on LT's seam and then the ILB doesn't have to vacate behind it. At that point we just hoping for 2nd and 10. If the left corner wants to cheat up too much that gives us the opportunity to come back with a "3 and go" route for Davis and maybe a big play over the top.
